Dear Parents,
Thank you for your patience as we have worked through some necessary planning in preparation for resuming structured learning opportunities for your child. I understand there has been a lot of uncertainty about what learning is going to look like moving forward. I can assure you that we are going to work on key learning outcomes at-home within the parameters established by the province and CBE. Starting Tuesday March 31st, you can access a daily learning plan on my new bolgger at: https://msjthomson.blogspot.com/ Please note, that you will be required to submit daily learning assignments to my e-mail address. You can do this by scanning the work or taking a picture on your phone and e-mail it to me daily by 5:00 p.m. Starting Monday April 6, 2020, you can access weekly learning plans on the blogger. Each week’s plan will highlight what we are working on and will include various activities or tasks I would like your child to work on. Again, you will be required to take pictures of your child’s work and e-mail it to me. I will primarily be communicating with you and your child via the teacher blog at https://msjthomson.blogspot.com/ Students and/or parents can reach out to me for help or for clarification via e-mail at [email protected]Monday-Friday from 9:00-11:00. I will also be checking my e-mail on a regular basis outside of those times and respond to you in a timely manner. I recognize this is new for most of us and we will get through this together. I am here for your child and look forward to being in regular contact with your child and yourself. Thank you for your continued support, Jackie Thomson

Dear Parents,
I wanted to thank you so much for your kind words and support over the past week. I want you to know I think about my students often and wish them all the best over Spring Break. I am looking forward to reconnecting with them after the break and I ask that you please continue to watch your emails and my teacher blog as we move forward after the break. Please remember, Spring break is a great time to have an adventure while reading a book, write an amazing story of the events you tackle on your break or create or play a fabulous board game as a family. If you missed the opportunity to collect personal shoes and items on March 18, please know that all items will remain here at the school until further notice and they are safe. Enjoy your time over the break and we will reconnect in April. Please watch the website for updates and check the blog for information. Please make note of the blog address change, effective for April 2020. https://msjthomson.blogspot.com Thank you so much for your support, Ms. Thomson Leprechaun Traps! On Friday March 13th, the Grade One students will be building Leprechaun Traps. Please help your child plan and collect materials to make a leprechaun trap. The materials and any fasteners that are required, are to be brought to school on March 12th. The students will be making their trap at school in hopes of catching a leprechaun. Each trap should fit on a school desk. Please do not make the traps at home, as this is part of our new Science unit, entitled, Building Things. You can draw a plan and send it into school along with the materials. Painting of any materials can be done at home, as we will not have time to wait for the paint to dry before putting our trap together. I do have some tape and glue at school that can be used but if you have others you can send them in. Other fasteners may include pipe cleaners, clothespins, paperclips, etc. Thank you for your support. Grade One Teachers . To help solidify our doubles facts, we made these flip books. Ask your child to share doubles facts to 20 with you.
We are excited to host the Pink Shirt Day Assembly on Wednesday February 26th at 1:30 .
Don't forget to wear your pink shirt. Language Arts
I can experiment with word patterns to make new words. We have been working with "eep" and "ail" words. We made flip books containing these words, unscrambled sentences and looked for these word families during guided reading in our books. I can edit my work. We used our editing checklist to help us edit our "How To Build A Snowman" writing pieces. Grade One students are expected to : 1) check for obvious spelling errors 2)rephrase sentences by adding or deleting words 3)to use sensory details to improve and enhance artistry Math We have continued to practice subtraction word problems this week. Key subtraction vocabulary has been introduced and as we complete sample problems together, we look for words and phrases such as "how many are left?" and "how many more?" We will be looking at fact families in our upcoming lessons to reinforce the connection between addition and subtraction. Science I can identify the five senses and explain how I use my senses to interpret my world. We have been studying the five senses in Science. Last week, we used a variety of materials to describe how items feel such as bumpy, rough, smooth, fluffy and soft. We also conducted an experiment for our sense of taste where we made observations about how apples and applesauce are the same and how they are different. Social Studies In preparation for our Grade One Assembly on Pink Shirt Day (February 26th) we have been looking at the characteristics that make a good friend and what it means to be accepting of peoples unique qualities and differences. The Grade Ones are excited to host The Pink Shirt Day Assembly on Wednesday February 26that 1:00. Parents are more than welcome to attend as we showcase our learning about the meaning behind Pink Shirt Day and what is means to show acceptance and how to be a good friend.
Please ensure that your child has a pink shirt to wear on Wednesday February 26th, we will send home reminders prior to this date. Thank you for your cooperation and support. In Math, we have been using our knowledge of tens and ones to group objects and count them accurately. We have also been working with base ten blocks in order to represent our number of the day using base ten manipulatives. Students have been introduced to a math game on www.abcya.com that helps them practice this skill. |
