In Social Studies, we have started looking at symbols of Canada. After completing some research on the beaver using classroom iPads, videos and books. We wrote some sentences about some of the things we learned. Before we put our information into sentences, we reviewed what good writers do and then began our writing. We spent some time doing some guided drawings of the beaver. Finally, we started our paper mâché beaver masks with our artist in residence. We will paint and put the final details on our masks on January 20th. It has been a fun process and we are looking forward to seeing our end products.

We are planning on going to the Calgary Zoo on Thursday, January 16th. Even though it will be cold, we are still planning to go to the Zoo at this time. If this changes, parents will be informed. We have a program that will take place in a Zoo classroom and we will spend the rest of the day in buildings. There should only be a short walk between buildings. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather with winter jacket, snow pants, hats, mittens, scarves, boots, etc. All students can wear pants for this trip and not the formal tunic uniform.
It is hard to believe that we are almost half way through the school year. We have lots to do and learn:) Thank you again for all of your support.

Thank you for your support, Jackie Thomson [email protected] Check the homework page for our "no excuse" word list. Go through the list with your child. What words does he/she need practice with reading or spelling? We will have a spelling test on some of these words on December 19th.
December 19th is the last day of school for student before the winter break. It is also a half day so students will leave at noon. Our class is collecting toothbrushes for our Fill A Sock for the Mustard Seed school project. Students are working on writing super sentences and self-evaluating their work. What is a super sentence? Students will know that they can write a super sentence if they are able to meet the following criteria.
I can write a sentence that makes sense. I used a capital for the beginning of my sentence. I used a capital at the beginning of names. I have a period at the end of my sentence. Students are also encouraged to add descriptive details to their written work and to use our group generated word banks as a reference. As part of our Social Studies Program, we are learning about family traditions. Please have your child bring in one significant item that represents a family tradition that you celebrate. This could be linked to Christmas, Hanukkah, Eid, Birthday Celebrations, etc. Please print and complete the Family Traditions page by clicking the link below. Draw a picture of the artifact and write about the tradition that is followed by your family. Please have your child bring in the description along with the item on or before Monday November 25th. Each student will have the opportunity to present his/her significant item to the class and explain the family tradition at some point during the week of the 25th.
Thanks for your cooperation and support. We have been learning about the significance of Remembrance Day and the reason why we wear a poppy. Using our knowledge about warm colours on the colour wheel and the colours in a sunset, we used water colour paints and water colour paper to create these beautiful backgrounds. Finally, we used black construction paper to create these simple silhouettes.
Our Remembrance Day Assembly will be on Friday November the 8th at 10:30. Please have your child dress in their formal uniform for this important ceremony. The assembly will be put on by the Grade 2's. We are taking in food donations for the Veteran Food Bank if you would like to send in non-perishable food items to support our heroes. Your support is greatly appreciated. We created these beautiful art pieces showing a person catching a snowflake on their tongue. It was a challenge drawing a person from the perspective of looking up into the sky. The students worked hard to create their unique art projects.
